Technical SEO for founders launching an MVP

Technical SEO for founders launching an MVP

Founders treat SEO as a marketing problem to fix after launch. Half of it is actually engineering — decisions baked into how the site gets built. Metadata, structured data, and URL structure are cheap to get right in the initial build and expensive to retrofit once a live product has real traffic and backlinks pointing at the wrong paths.

Start with metadata and structured data. The failure mode we still see most: the same title tag and meta description duplicated across forty pages, because a template rendered them and nobody overrode the defaults. Every page needs its own. Layer in JSON-LD — Organization and WebSite on every page, Article schema on blog posts, Service schema on service pages, FAQPage schema anywhere you already answer questions — so Google can render a rich result instead of guessing from body copy.

Then get the URL layer right. Old CMS slugs and legacy paths need real 301 redirects, not silent 404s — a founder who relaunches a site on a new stack loses months of accumulated authority the moment old paths just die. Canonical tags prevent duplicate-content splits when the same content is reachable through more than one URL — with and without a trailing slash, with tracking parameters, through both a category page and a direct link.

None of this replaces content or backlinks — for a new domain, those are still the actual growth lever, not a meta tag. But technical SEO is the floor. Get it right once during the build and it stops being a recurring bug you rediscover every few months.
